Review for The Sato Project, Brooklyn, NY, USA

Rating: 2 stars

PLEASE READ BEFORE ADOPTING
We contacted sato project appx 3 years ago when we met a lovely dog in our town and asked the owners where they had adopted from.
We had read and loved the story of how the sato project came to be so we reached out and inquired about a cute little dog we had seen on the website.
They responded quickly and told us this dog had already been adopted and sent us a different dog that fit our request for a small and friendly dog.
The process was smooth and before we knew it we were meeting the foster family in a park in Brooklyn to take Bennie home.
Bennie was sweet and timid and we could tell he was going to be bigger than we expected but we didn’t mind we were already in love, (Bennie grew to be a very big beautiful strong 65 lb dog)
Bennie was 9 months when we brought him home. Around 3 months later my daughters friend came to visit and Bennie lunged and bit her inner thigh, he broke skin and had to be seen by a doctor.
We thought this was a fluke so we continued to socialize Bennie at the dog park and have people over to meet him but the aggression did not subside.
He bit two people at the dog park, bit my neighbor twice.
At this point we had worked with 3 different trainers, one who looked into the sato and explained to us that some of these dogs had feral or wild bloodlines from generations of living on the streets in puerto rico and they should be rehabilitated before being thrown into homes.
We turned our lives upside down for Bennie.
We live in a small house with a small yard and when people came over we gated, crated and confined Bennie.
When we went on vacation finding a kennel that would accept aggressive dogs was impossible it made out lives so difficult, but still we made a commitment.
With extreme precautions we had no more incidents with Bennie for a year and a half until I tried to take a bone away from him that had been chewed down and he attacked me.
He bit my hand my arm my hip and his aggression was something I never expected.
I reached out to sato at this point and the only help they offered was a board and train place that was thousands of dollars that I just could not afford nor did I want my dog terrified into submission.
Needless to say the support they offered was disappointing.
Another 6 months went by of life restrictions to keep our dog and people around us safe.
Until recently we were laying in bed like we usually do and I leaned over to kiss Bennie and before I knew it he attacked me this time he got my face and I covered my head and he bit the back of my head and neck so badly it landed me in the hospital for two days and 70 stitches.
We have made the gut wrenching decision to put him down.
We feel we have tried everything and he is a danger to anyone around him and now also a danger to his own family.
The good parts of him greatly outweigh the bad but because of his size and strength the bite could’ve been deadly, he was an inch from a main artery in my neck.
I share this story because I want everyone to be aware that most of these dogs are wonderful and have no aggression but some of you will be adopting wild dogs with wild dog instincts with no rehabilitation and no support once they enter your home.
