Review for Sustainable San Mateo County, San Mateo, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I am the Board Chair for this nonprofit. We educate about all 3 E's of sustainability - Economy, social Equity and the Environment. We stay true to our purpose, limit ourselves to the County of San Mateo, California, and publish an annual Indicators Report which rates the County on 32 different Indicators. We also have an annual Awards event which recognizes those in our County who are putting sustainability into action. The primary focus is to influence the city councils (there are 20 cities in our county) and the County Board of Supervisors to promote sustainability by recognizing that their decisions today will impact generations to come. We also work with other organizations and the community at large to further these concepts.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the increase of awareness and actions around sustainability throughout the county.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I can't answer this since I have had a hand in running the organization.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the willingness to participate that the many volunteers have brought to the organization with their intelligent and thoughtful insight and foresight.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

of the highest caliber. With very few exceptions, all were a pleasure to work with. Many have been with Sustainable San Mateo County since its inception in 1992.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

expand its efforts exponentially! It could hire more staff to help with all of the ideas that we come up with.

Ways to make it better...

it couldn't have been better. I have enjoyed working with the dedicated volunteers and small staff in helping to spread the word about sustainability.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

finding the time and money to do everything we want to do. We have a small staff so rely a lot on volunteers.

One thing I'd also say is that...

that smallness of the staff means that the volunteers realize how much they are needed and participating is its own reward.

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

Role:  Board Member & I have been active with the organization since its inception - 1992.
