Review for Communities in Schools of Rowan County, Salisbury, NC, USA
I have a good friend who talked me into volunteering my time in the Communities in Schools program this year. It has turned out to be the highlight of my week. My fourth grade student seems to enjoy having someone else to share things about what is happening to her during our reading time. I was excited to share with her the birth of my first grandchild; to which she shared about having two younger brothers. This week she was excited to share with me that she has a chinese hamster. There is reading that goes on also. And I have picked out several books to help encourage her reading level to advance. This is a program that you can do and work a full time job and still feel like you are giving back to the community.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
My student seems to understand what she reads better. After we read a few pages we review. I think a one on one relationship helps keep the students more accountable. Teachers time and resources are so strapped that it is nice to have volunteers help with reading or math for a student needing more help.
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
The organization is doing a good job with getting the volunteers. It has not been my experience but some volunteers have had trouble with student accountability. The students need to realize the volunteers are there to help them but they need to help themselves too.
