Review for Gig Harbor Peninsula Historical Society, Gig Harbor, WA, USA
I am at the age where I recognize the importance of gathering history and providing a safe setting information about the past, both personally and in a general community manner. I am a charter member of the museum since October, 2010, when the Grand Opening occurred. I have attended a few presentations and would love to attend more, but I now live far enough away from Gig Harbor that getting there is not something I cannot do often. II did attend a presentation on Feb 17, 2011 by Ed Berntsen. He spoke about the history of Gig Harbor's many communities up to about 1924. He was an excellent speaker,, who is a wellspring of historical information. He was clearly very interested in getting that information out to the public. I lived in Gig Harbor from 1955 -1965 - not a long time to those who have grown up there. I attend the schools from grade 7 to 12. It was a wonderful place to grow up, but I knew little about its history. I had no idea how Gig Harbor came to be until this lecture. It just makes me want to learn more and the museum makes that information available to all members. Just going into the different parts of the museum can take several days. In addition to the exhibits there is a great amount of information stored safely and access to it is readily available to the public. The building is beautiful and it is easy to find your way around it. There are always several volunteers available to provide information if you ask. I believe Gig Harbor has been greatly enhanced by the museum.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
By visiting the exhibits that vary every so often and learning a great deal about a town, that, though I was only there for 10 years, I call "home". I also have learned about the early years of the communities of Gig Harbor via lectures and talking with various museum volunteers. I also am kept informed of upcoming events via email that is regularly sent out to members.
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
This is a hard question to answer because of my, so far, limited time spent there. I actually cannot think of any changes that would improve the quality of the experience available. It is an excellent asset to the community as well as to anyone interested in learning more about Gig Harbor. Perhaps getting the information out that they are always gathering more information for the ongoing collection of local history, especially from those who are now elderly but remember their early life in the area.
