Review for The Mac Parkman Foundation For Adolescent Concussive Trauma Inc, Anna Maria, FL, USA
It is wonderful to see this organization continue to grow. Their mission and motivation are truly commendable. They focus on educating the community, funding essential research, and driving changes in safety protocols to protect kids in sports. They also work to develop access to treatments and best practices for return-to-play and return-to-school protocols. This organization isn't about taking anything away but rather about making sports safer for our children. Thank you for supporting kids in sports and teaching parents how to be the best advocates for their children both on and off the field!
Review for The Mac Parkman Foundation For Adolescent Concussive Trauma Inc, Anna Maria, FL, USA
This organization has given parents a gift - breaking down the hard science of how concussions, sub-concussive trauma, and repetitive brain injuries can affect a child athletes brain development and lead to mental illness and suicide. For parents with kids who play sports, this information is critical to know and understand in today's world of youth sports. As a mom of four, our kids are just as active in sports as we were at their age, however, the youth sports industry has changed. When we were growing up it was common for kids to play multiple sports in the year and kids today are playing year-round without breaks, and recreational leagues have now turned into competitive travel leagues that have upped the game on play and opened these kids up to injuries we did not really have to worry about as kids. As a parent we want to support our children, but still protect them, which is not always easy to do when you do not understand what we are protecting them from or how to best help.
Mac Parkman has taken the time to ensure that we as parents are aware of the risks associated with exposing our children, early on, to concussive and sub-concussive trauma in contact sports, driving new research on causes, treatments, and preventative measures that can be taken to prevent future brain injuries affecting our children that can lead to mental illness, aggression, and suicide ideation. It is reassuring to have this network of support available from an organization I know is focused on providing a safe environment of play for all kids.
