I have been volunteering with One Spirit for over 10 years. What made me offer to work with One Spirit was the fact that they don’t come from the outside and tell the Lakota what to do and what not to do. They also respect the Lakota traditions and create possibilities for elders to teach the young ones about their history and traditions in places like the Allen Youth Center.
One Spirit raises awareness for the situation of the Lakota living on the Pine Ridge Reservation, raises money for various projects, let the Lakota decide themselves in which projects to invests, lends a hand in making the projects come true and provides work. Furthermore, with the help of One Spirit children can have a good time during their summer holidays at a camp, youth who just left school can have an apprenticeship during the summer and get a chance to see how life can also be.
I believe they have the right approach in helping the Lakota help themselves and I am honored to be a part of One Spirit.
