Lakewold Gardens is a serene beautiful place in the middle of a busy town and a very busy life. It is a community treasure. It is a piece of community history because it shows a time when Lakewood had many such estates. Now the old estates are broken up and many houses are crammed onto the old lots. It is a piece of horticultural history also. It was built with painstaking care by a famous garden architect an the private owners over many years. It is right that now a non-profit organization honors the original owners gift to the community by keeping it alive with beauty all year long. I love this house and garden. Where else in this country could I buy a membership to an old estate for such a reasonable yearly fee and pretend that I am an heiress reading the Sunday paper paper in her sun porch? I am a preschool teacher. I take care of 17 children everyday of the week. I love visiting Lakewold on the weekends because It give me a feeling of peace. It is local and easy to get to so I gives me time to dream close to home. It also gives me inspiration for my own garden. The lady who runs the garden shop is really friendly and knowledgeable. The garden shop carries unique things that I cannot find anywhere else. It would be great if Lakewold won the $5,000 award to keep this wonderful place up and running and inspiring future generations.
