In 2017 I stayed for three months as a voluntary worker with Star of Hope in Mombasa, Kenya. During these months I found myself within a community of the most loving and caring people, all working together to help elevate the next generation of Kenyan youth.

I got to visit Star of Hope-ran schools both in the city’s more slum-like areas as well as the surrounding countryside and saw with my own eyes the importance of these schools in the schoolchildren’s life. The schools in Mombasa which Star of Hope is running does not only provide the children with the basic education needed to participate in Kenyan society, but they also provide something just as important during their formative years, nutrition. During the day, the schoolchildren are given food, ensuring that they are well-fed enough to be able to take part in the education, as well as stay healthy.

During my time in Kenya, I got the opportunity to engage in all kinds of different assignments ranging from helping to renovate classrooms, holding some lectures to simply hanging out with the kids, especially those who had a bit of a harder time to adapt socially with the others. In every assignment I got I met such loving and engaged people with a burning passion for helping and involving these children. One assignment that especially left a large imprint on me was visiting the homes of the children to talk with the parents about the value of allowing their children to get an education. Seeing the living conditions these schoolchildren come from while also every day meeting the absolute joy and optimism these children are filled with makes me absolutely convinced of the value and importance of the work that Star of Hope does in Kenya.
