Review for WORLD PARROT TRUST USA INC, Travelers Rest, SC, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I’ve been a member of World Parrot Trust for over a decade. Back in 1990 I adopted a Yellow Fronted Amazon Parrot named Boo. Unfortunately, very few people in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina knew anything about captive birds. Boo was my cherished pet for 20 years! I realized parrots are unique and highly intelligent, and therefore should be protected in the wild, and adored in captivity. I searched for a worthy charity that would be dedicated to saving these jewels of the jungle. As a member of World Parrot Trust, I receive a gorgeous quarterly magazine titled PsittaScene Magazine. An electronic version is also available online. The issues highlight the mission of World Parrot Trust, which is to rescue, rehabilitate, and release parrots worldwide. World Parrot Trust partners with international conservation programs to protect an array of endangered exotic species. Oftentimes emergency funds are needed for confiscations of illegally poached parrots, intercepted at airports. Sadly, baby parrots are poached in the nest, and sometimes trees are cut down to reach them. Habitat loss and deforestation already limits the amount of nesting trees available. The captured baby parrots, along with juveniles and parents, are typically crammed in crates, with no food or water. Parrots suffer greatly. World Parrot Trust (WPT) is able to mobilize a team on the ground to transport the confiscated parrots to a safe place. Then round the clock dedicated personnel feed the birds, veterinary care is provided, and outdoor aviaries are built. It can take up to 2 years to acclimate birds to foods that will be foraged in the wild, and to build up flight muscles. Parrots that participate in a release will still receive supplemental food. PsittaScene Magazine also offers members advice for their own companion parrots, which is crucial to a happy bird. Articles on nutrition, parrot behavior, and socialization are outstanding and inspirational. In 2011 I adopted Freedom the Parrot, a Panama Amazon Parrot. He is now 25 years old, and is my best friend! Together we were able to participate in many Zoom meetings with World Parrot Trust staff members, and their global partners. It is truly remarkable to see the field researchers in action! Saving parrots requires unbelievable treks through many environments, just to reach them! I’ve witnessed a superior level of conservation to save these avian gems. I’m proud to be associated with World Parrot Trust, and encourage everyone to donate to the organization. Their website provides the finest galleries of parrots, podcasts, expert advice for pet birds, and Flock Talk Magazine featuring updates around the world. World Parrot Trust has the willingness to embrace the challenges of future parrot protection.
