Review for Literacy Volunteers of Gloucester Inc, White Marsh, VA, USA
Without the efforts of the Literacy Volunteers of Gloucester, the program that is carried out in the local jail would not happen. The ages of the inmates who request services range from 19 to 55. The youth realizes that their dropping out of school has been detrimental to success in the job market; the 20 to 30 year olds realize that with their high school education - they need more - so are tutored for acceptance to college.
A great story combines both! A young man who had been incarcerated for most of his life from age 14 to 23 came to ask for tutoring. The first several times, my job was to break down the barriers of low self esteem, blaming others for his mistakes, and a huge chip on his shoulders. After passing his GED test, he then enrolled in a correspondence course on auto mechanics. Upon release, he is scheduled to take his ASE examination - getting him in a job market that he loves, providing (we certainly hope) the means to change his lifestyle. We are extremely proud of him, and he welcomes the opportunity to lead other inmates to us. He credits ths organization with his success!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
the satisfaction of those men and women who have attained a goal that they themselves have set. I have seen the numbers of students grow among the population , particularly in these tough economic times , and witnessed their self respect grow without bounds upon their accomplishments.
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
increase the expectations of all tutors, requiring more and better training to provide more and better service.
