Review for Glsen Inc, New York, NY, USA
The Gay Lesbian and Straight Education Network has been an influential organization in both the development of my personal as well as my professional life. On a personal level I have found strength and pride as an openly gay educator in Boston. I have been empowered by my work as an activist on the local Boston board member, and board Chair, as well as co chair of the National Advisory Council. Through our work we have made schools safe for thousands of school age youth by advocating for legislation which protects students, educating administrators, teachers, students and parents about the harmful affects of anti gay bullying and harassment in our schools. Professionally as a teacher, I have been able to infuse LGBT themes in my curriculum which further provides all students with the opportunity to acknowledge sexual orientation and gender expression as only one facet of a person's overall identity. I am proud of GLSEN's work throughout the country and especially on the National Level in spearheading anti bullying legislation across the country. I will continue to support GLSEN in it's efforts to make all schools safe for every menber of a school community, Frank Pantano Boston, MA

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
the results of the research done as evidenced in the School Climate Surveys, and related publications. I have also seen the results in the number of successful Gay Straight Alliances that exist and in the number of students who feel safe and nurtured.
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
empower the local chapters to do greater work by infusing national dollars at the local level.
What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
meeting and working with like minded people from all over the country as well as being able to highlight the extent of GLSEN's work in Massachusetts.
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
committed, caring, competent, and dedicated to the ending of homophobia in our schools.
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
Work at the legislative level in implementing the anti bullying initiatives as well as infuse money at the local level to train school systems, institutionalizing awareness, support and advocacy for all students
Ways to make it better...
the national organization were able to deliver on all of its projects and resources that support local grassroots activism.
In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...
Sustaining a fund raising model that supports the work on a local and national level. Local chapters are largely volunteers who depend local donors to support the work.
One thing I'd also say is that...
GLSEN has been at the forefront of LGBT education for many years throughout the country
