Our program at Duke Health Center was a recipient of LAMB Foundation of NC, Inc. donations for over 30 years while I was working as a pediatrician for children with disabilities including autism and fragile X syndrome. Part of the donation money helped with laboratory testing to evaluate families to see who was carrying the gene for fragile X syndrome in a diagnosed family. Many of the families had members. who did not have health insurance, and it was important to have this medical information for educational and genetic counseling purposes. We also received money to stock the clinic with learning materials such as children's books, wooden puzzles, flash cards, etc. Some of our families were poor and didn't have the kind of toys and learning materials that most families take for granted. These donations improved the quality of our work and enabled us to be much more helpful to families than we would have been otherwise.
