Review for Cambodian Children's Fund, Santa Monica, CA, USA
I recently had the pleasure of taking a tour of Cambodian Children’s Fund in Cambodia over the summer. It was an eye opening and humbling experience to see a different lifestyle that I have never been exposed to.
We started the tour by journeying through the primary school. I was touched by how friendly and happy the kids were when I was here. Many kids smiled at me and introduced themselves as they were walking into and out of their classrooms. The classrooms were not over populated with kids so the teachers can give them proper attention.
After primary school the children are exposed to a wide range of subject matters to focus where they would like to take their careers. We journeyed to the Neeson Cripps Academy where I was in awe of an amazing hand carved mural in stone that told the story of the history of rural Cambodian life. The mural tells the story of humble generational beginnings of life in the country, to children graduating college and entering their chosen career path. In this building I was shown all the tools for teaching kids a wide range of subject matter from science, computers, technology, art, photography and more.
I was also shown the garbage dump where the children in previous years had to search through to find recyclable material to help make money for their families. The garbage dump has since been covered and grown over with grass and plants. I saw the hill as a metaphor for the transition that CCF has helped create a better life for these families. Overall I was very touched by the passionate caring staff as well as the friendly children's faces I saw on this tour.
