Review for Northwest Family Services, Portland, OR, USA

Rating: 5 stars

My name is Elda, and I have a friend who received a free mammogram through the ScreenWise Program at NWFS. She worked with Darina Sanchez and gave me her number, encouraging me to call. Darina helped set up the Dr. visit and mammogram, also scheduled a taxi for me. She came to both of my visits to help me with everything. I have trouble walking and Darina made sure the clinic had a wheelchair waiting for me, then she pushed me around everywhere I needed to go. It was kind of overwhelming and I don’t know how I would have managed it without her. The clinic told me I should have a follow-up visit in 6 months. Darina has checked in with me several times and will be helping to set up my next appointment at the end of this year. I want everyone at NWFS and the ScreenWise Program to know how much I appreciate the help and support. Que Dios te bendiga – May God bless you.

My doctor sent me for my routine mammogram. When I did not hear back, I figured my
mammogram was good, but three days later I received a call from the radiology clinic
asking me to come in for a diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound. As soon as they were
done, the doctor asked me to return the following day for a biopsy.
I had a lot of anxiety because I was not getting my results from anyone. I called my doctor
2-3 times a day for a whole week. I missed the call when they finally reached back out, and
they left me a voicemail with a number to call. When I called that number, I learned it was
for Salem Cancer Institute, which worried and confused me because nobody had told me
that I had cancer. I was referred by Salem Cancer Institute to Yaira Canchola, the
community health worker for Northwest Family Services. She enrolled me into a Kaiser
Permanente program that would provide me with donated care.
I have no words to express my gratitude to Yaira, nor a way to ever pay her back for
everything that she did. She was really patient and attentive with me. She guided me
through the process, went with me to my first appointment, helped me with translation,
and helped me transfer my medical records from my clinic to Kaiser Permanente. Thanks
to the Kaiser program, I no longer have to pay for my medications.
Please tell Yaira that I will always remember her, and I am thankful to her. I am sending
hugs and prayers her way. With her, I went from having a tremendous panic attack to
peace and tranquility, because I knew that she was taking me on the right path, where I
was going to be healed. She inspires peace when she talks; she is so sweet, patient, and
polite.
Thank you to Northwest Family Services and to Kaiser
Permanente for all that you do.
