Review for Youthlinc, Salt Lake City, UT, USA
I owe a lot to Youthlinc and the leadership experience it gave me. The service year program empowered me at a time that I needed it most. It showed me community and love and service at a time where I felt lost. I had the amazing opportunity to enroll in the Service year in 2020, and it absolutely changed my life. Engaging in local service allowed me to reach into the needs of my community and gave me a higher sense of purpose. Because of Youthlinc, I have become more clear and focused on what I want to pursue and center my goals around as I enter adulthood.
One of my favorite aspects of Youthlinc is how they engage in the conversation around what it means to be a humanitarian as opposed to a white savior. The organization actively involves education modules and discussion around important ideas that are imperative to engage in within the humanitarian world. Even as I travel to developing countries and work on projects, I don't feel as if I'm engaging in the role of a white savior. And I think this largely due to the incredible service model that Youthlinc has cultivated which I think makes it stand out as an ethical and extraordinary non-profit.
More than anything Youthlinc has shown me that service breaches barriers. If you engage in work with no goal other than to make someone else's life a little bit better, I think you'll find that you'll accomplish far more than that. Service has no regard for skin color or for socioeconomic class. It doesn't care about the language you speak or the experiences you've lived through. Service speaks to right now, service speaks to a growth mindset that humanity can be found if you're willing to look for it.
