A while ago I read a story how Apopo trains rats to find earthquake casualties. I was totally fascinated by this story about the rat and her handler. I checked them out and was amazed by the innovative idea of using rats to detect land mines and sniff tubercolosis. As a lawyer, part of my work are rights of disabled persons and a lot of disabilities can be avoided by clearing areas of landmines. Apopo is doing a great job de-mining areas, giving the land back to people and prevent death or severe injuries. Subsequently I adopted one of their rats, making sure the little guy gets his treats to be fit for his job sniffing landmines in Cambodia.
