Review for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, Norfolk, VA, USA

Rating: 1 stars

First I must tell you who I am. I am a true animal rights person. A sentient being is a moral person. I follow Gary Francione's theories on animal rights--not on the environment or trees. Singer & PeTA together have eviscerated the animal rights movement in the United States. They are not an animal rights group, they have no clear message of any sort, they confuse people to the max, they don't educate true animal rights--they are a New Welfare organization--a type of welfare--not a rights organization. They raise lots of money & are very popular with people who don't want to take personal responsibility & become vegan as a moral imperative--just donate & PETA will take care of everything. Animal welfare leads us only to more animal welfare & won't lead us to abolish animal use. Animal welfare does not challenge the moral, legal, political, & socio-cultural systems of oppression that create the conditions for rampant nonhuman-animal suffering & death, nor does it challenge speciesism. Welfare organizations seek legal protection for some animals under some restricted conditions, but by working within laws that enshrine the status of animals as property, welfare is only an apparatus of continuing dominion. The welfarist model has failed & will continue to fail because it focuses discussion on the wrong set of issues--cruelty rather than use. Welfare does not recognize the inherent value of sentient beings. So Gary says, "I reject animal welfare reform & single-issue campaigns because they are not only inconsistent with the claims of justice that we should be making if we really believe that animal exploitation is wrong, but because these approaches cannot work as a practical matter. Animals are property & it costs money to protect their interests; therefore, the level of protection accorded to animal interests will always be low & animals will, under the best of circumstances, still be treated in ways that would constitute torture if applied to humans. By endorsing welfare reforms that supposedly make exploitation more compassionate or single-issue campaigns that falsely suggest that there is a coherent moral distinction between meat & dairy or between fur and wool or between steak & foie gras, we betray the principle of justice that says that all sentient beings are equal for purposes of not being used exclusively as human resources. And, on a practical level, we do nothing more than make people feel better about animal exploitation." PETA does not change the discussion paradigm. PETA is nothing more than a money sink hole.

Thank you for your comments on animal rights. PETA consistently challenges speciesism (see https://www.peta.org/features/what-is-speciesism/) not just in word but in deed (https://prime.peta.org/news/petas-legal-team-is-changing-the-world-for-animals/). We encourage people to make the most compassionate choices that they can and to focus on issues that will have the greatest impact on improving the lives of animals. We’re grateful to our donors and supporters for their vital financial support and for every action (https://www.peta.org/action/) they take for animals. PETA supporters are helping to wipe out entire exploitative industries, from angora (https://www.peta.org/features/how-peta-beat-the-angora-industry-mohair-next/) to tiger cub-petting (https://www.peta.org/blog/tim-stark-endangered-species-act-lawsuit/) and more. Please see https://www.peta.org/about-peta/victories/ for recent progress.

Review for Save the Redwoods League, San Francisco, CA, USA

I was so happy to endorse this formerly fabulous charity. I am not doubting their official rating. What I must bring to the attention of the public & bring to the surface is their clearcutting of Sequoia Forests in 2021 & if you go to ILoveTrees.net you will find ghastly photos of truly ancient & very healthy Sequoias cut down. I was so utterly horrified that in good consciousness I can no longer donate to this hypocritical organization. You don't have to be an advocate for ancient trees, but certainly seeing the real pictures--the sight of the recent clear cutting, the road building & the murder of these very ancient trees especially after the 2000 fires that killed a full 15% of Sequoia in a forest is nothing short of callous insanity. The killing by human streamlined monstrosities-machinery of the ancient Sequoia that have already lived thousands of years & should live to be 5000 years old or more if not for something or some human coming along to end its life is nothing short of horrific & evil. What is it that makes this organization feel so superior that they can decide who lives & who dies? So I am adding photo proofs. In no way could I ever consent to such injustice. I cried my eyes out when I saw this. RIP dear ancient Sequoias.
