Review for People And Stories - Gente Y Cuentos Inc, Princeton, NJ, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I've been a People & Stories coordinator for nearly 25 years, working mostly with women in a residential program for recovery from substance abuse. I am always stunned by the insight, tenacity and candor participants bring to the discussions. No matter how many times I have read a familiar story--"Thank You, M'am" by Langston Hughes or "The Shawl" by Louise Erdrich--I learn something new from how people in the group respond. I listen to them share poignant, often difficult, experiences from their own lives; I watch them connect with each other. Over the eight-week series, I see them grow in confidence and self-expression. In their ongoing efforts to build sober, healthy lives, People & Stories offers connection and possibility. This program gives me hope.

Review for Northwest Philadelphia Interfaith Hospitality Network Inc, Philidelphia, PA, USA

Rating: 4 stars

For several years, my family and I--often, along with friends--have cooked and shared dinner with families being served through NPIHN. It has been an eye-opening experience to see the face of homelessness, which shatters stereotypes and gives statistics a name and a story. I've been impressed with how smoothly NPIHN manages the logistics of moving families, often with young children, in and out of various churches and synagogues, and with how they support their volunteers. NPIHN works by building relationships with clients who are homeless and helping connect them with the resources to gain stability.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Seeing volunteers and clients share conversation and a meal together--a moment of dignity and commonality.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Expand its reach to serve even more homeless families and involve more faith communities.
