Review for Feathered Friends Forever Rescue/Sanctuary Inc., Harlem, GA, USA

Rating: 1 stars

I used to really respect this place and think their work was amazing. I would volunteer here a lot and even brought people from my command here to do work (even though I had to call repeatedly to try and get someone to give us a day and time to come and work to do). But that was before I understood what was going on behind the scenes and before I knew as much about proper bird husbandry.

They feed the birds mostly sunflower seeds and leave them outdoors in all weather (yes, even the burning heat and freezing cold). Birds constantly die of exposure and disease. There is no veterinarian that comes in and looks at all these 1000s of birds. If you do a little searching, you'll see there've been multiple occasions where these people have cooked the books and embezzled money into their "birds and bullets" or whatever it is company(?) or just used it for themselves.

I adopted a bird here too, back in 2016. It took forever to get them to get back to me on the application, and then I had to call constantly to arrange meet n greets to come see the bird I was planning to get. I'd get ghosted or my calls wouldn't get returned. It was like they didn't care if I adopted the bird or not. At the time, the cages I saw in the house (where the bird I was visiting was kept) had no toys or enrichment. Just seeds and water. I was relatively new to birdkeeping at the time and didn't think to take pictures, but I told myself that surely they knew what they were doing.

They always manage to lie their way out of any reports to authorities, and hide behind the front of "look at all these birds flocked together and happy." If you look closely, you'll see plucked feathers, underweight animals, pitiful diets.

They let macaws in the flights breed, take the hybrid chicks out of the dirt, and sell them under the table.

They don't let most people into the "house" up front. That's because it's filthy and full of rodents.

On top of that, a couple that tried to help them out a few years ago got the runaround, got scammed out of labor and money and promised to be given the facility. Once they started exposing their scam, they got run off.

When they quietly tried to start their own rescue, one of the owner's family members helped him trademark the first name they came up with for their rescue. And now more recently in May of 2022, the owner has attempted to do the same with the new name of their rescue. These people don't go out of their way to harass FFF or its owner (even though he rightly deserves it for fleecing people out of their money... don't "sanctuary" your bird here without visiting first... please). But the owner and his family sure do what they can to harass people who have tried to help them. I don't know why a big, well established "rescue" needs to punch down at a small rescue that's less than a year old unless they've got something to hide or they feel threatened somehow.

If you've got a bird sanctuaried here? Don't call to ask how it is. I highly recommend finding a way to try and come see it. See if the owner can even figure out which flight he's put your bird in. I'd be very interested to see how that goes. Betting if he hands you a bird it won't be yours.

Really, they need to just mind their own business. Their practices are scummy enough as-is without harassing people who are literally just trying to run their own charity.
