I've tried donating as much as I can to this charity. I first read about what it does to help women who have obstetric fistulae, holes caused by the baby's head pushing against the pelvis, in an op. ed. in the NY Times a few decades ago. Obstetric fistulae happen when the blood flow to the tissues between the vagina and rectum gets cut off by the baby's head during long painful deliveries. The baby usually dies. The mother, if she survives, is left with urine leaking from the bladder, stool from the anus. The Fistulae Foundation surgically repairs obstetric fistulae for impoverished women in Asia & Africa. These women don't have access to emergency rooms, to running water. They are shunned because they smell bad. They may not even know why. They get infections. They die. If they'd been born in wealthier countries they would have had Cesarean sections instead of intense labors that wreck them. The Fistula Foundation repairs the holes in the bodies & souls of these poorest of poor women.
