After learning about Apopo’s amazing work using trained rats to detect landmines, I became a cheerleader for this worthy organization. Folks in the West may not appreciate the ongoing devastation wars from long ago continue to inflict on innocent people around the globe - yes, even now in 2022, landmines are a HUGE threat to life, limb, livestock, livelihoods, peace of mind!

Apopo is helping rid the world of these horrific remnants of conflicts past by using rats to sniff and detect so deminers can remove and detonate. This photo of wooden prosthetic legs provided to victims of landmines is from Laos.

I dream of a day when Apopo’s rats are happily retired, living out their days eating bananas, because the world is at long last mine-free…
