Review for A Different Breed Animal Rescue, Dallas, TX, USA

Rating: 1 stars

We saw a sweet little dog on Pet Finder we were looking for a companion for our five year old maltese mix as we had just lost our other dog to cancer . They said she was a chihuahua mix and I put in a request to adopt at about 8:30 on a Friday night. I got a response almost immediately saying my application looked great and when did I want to come pick her up. I was truly surprised as my other applications had taken longer and I usually was too late for the puppy I had picked out. So I counted myself lucky and we went to get her that afternoon. She was precious, a beautiful color and seemed quite healthy.. But I took her in to be checked over by our vet anyway, she had a cough and she was new to us. He told me he saw no chihuahua in her at all and wasn't sure what she was, but she was beautiful and he was sure she would be a great pet for us and companion to our other dog. He did prescribe eye drops as one eye was infected (slightly)and ear drops as one ear was infected. He said to watch her cough, he though it was perhaps allergies . Cost for the visit, close to $400 I let the foster know immediately. She only said to let her know how the puppy was later.
One week later we were back, the cough was worse and she was wheezing. He said it might be early pneumonia and put her on antibiotics, he said both her eye and ear were now clear. We did xrays at his suggestion to make sure the lungs were not full of fluid, they were not, we went home after paying another $425 bill. Again I called the foster and let her know things were not so good, she said just to keep her informed.
Less than a week later, my husband had to drive the baby to an emergency vet she was seizing and snapping and foaming at the mouth. She was tested and they said it was distemper, and she was released from her agony. We paid almost $400 for testing and for her to be euthanized. While he was with her the foster called me asking about our baby, I told her what was going on and she told me the other girl from the litter had been put down and one of the boys was very ill. She said they had no way of knowing all four puppies were already ill when they gave them to everyone. And mentioned another adopter was super angry and blaming her for the puppy dieing. She told me she was sorry and that "of course she would refund the "adoption fee"". And it was in my bank minutes later. But our hearts were broken and our bank account hit hard as well.
Then the final blow came when the five year old started coughing, she had had her shots but it had been over a year, apparently it didn't protect her, (They are suppose to be good for three years). We ordered a test from Amazon, they come 10 to a pack, and the price makes them less than $5 a piece, and it came back positive. We did all we could to keep her healthy short of checking her into the vet at $1000 a day so they could keep her hydrated. She never lost control of her bowels, but she stopped eating and hardly drank, she went blind almost over night, and we knew we were not going to be able to save her. We went to the emergency vet again, as everyone else we asked informed us how contagious she was (thank you we kinda knew), and that there were lots of cases in the Dallas area. We paid another $300 to send her over the rainbow bridge.
All of this happened within a month of bringing our new baby into our home. I added the prices to ask if it is not something the foster should have refunded? Other people told me the rescue should have refunded me everything that had to do with the adopted dog. They say any good rescue would have done it without being asked. I don't expect they would pay for our baby girl's illness although the puppy brought it into our home. But they gave us a very sick puppy, one that should have been tested before pickup for distemper and parvo. But they just rushed all four out the door to four homes that all lost their new babies within weeks.
And that is my story and reasoning for my one star review.
