Review for High Fives Nonprofit Foundation, Truckee, CA, USA
When I was 20 years old I had my right leg amputated below the knee after a bad snowboarding accident. Shortly after that, I moved to California for a new job and a fresh start in life. Shortly after the move, I received my first surfing lesson and my life completely changed from there. I slowly began to build my surfing ability and it became a true passion and therapy to help calm me down. Over the years I have started to compete and represent my home country Canada at international surf competitions. For the past several years I have seen the presence of High Fives at these competitions. Everyone involved with this organization has always been full of stoke, support for everyone involved, and all-around happiness. They have a very warm and accepting community that I am drawn to, and that makes people with differences feel accepted, and valued. I am so fortunate to be a recipient of one of their grants to enable me to train more and be able to push my physical and mental limits as an amputee.
