Review for Communities in Schools of Rowan County, Salisbury, NC, USA
CIS requires the combined efforts of their staff, the teachers, and volunteers. The CIS staff member at the school I mentor at is easy to reach. Typically I have to leave a message but I am called back before the school day has ended. She provides me with feedback about the volunteer work that I am doing and is there to answer any questions that I may have about the program, school, and especially anythign dealing with my 'little girl' that pertains to mentoring/tutoring.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
This program does help the children out. I can see it working as my 'little girl' begins to understand and use math skills that she struggled with. I can give her hope when she struggles and doubts herself as I once was a child that struggled with math too but now have a job in a field that requires a lot of technical math skills. My being there provides her with a friendship with an adult that she may or may not be getting outside of school.
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
The only thing that I think they could do to improve is to help keep the volunteers up-to-date on events that are happening at the school, like the contests between classes to raise either money or Box Tops for education. This would enable us volunteers to be able to help our kid's class (and ultimately the school) out with their fundraisers. I don't have kids and other volunteers are at school other than where their own children go.

Since my husband and I don't have kids of our own, this is a way for me to help a child out. It helps me to feel important.

When I get to see my 'little girl's' smiling face and see that I am helping her learn, I walk away with my whole day a glow.
