Review for Institute For Justice, Arlington, VA, USA
There are many non-profits that want to accomplish worthwhile changes in society. More often than not, however, they simply focus on activities toward those goals hoping for results. That is, they "help", "support", "teach", "train", "inform", "engage" and occasionally "publish". But if you ask them to describe what their efforts have actually accomplished; what in society has changed for the better because of their efforts, you'll find that they struggle to answer.
The Institute for Justice focuses on outcomes. They get results; they win. And when IJ wins, so do their clients. When they force government to change the rules back to "fair" they impact thousands of others. When they establish new case law, they can help millions of others in that locality, county or state. In Federal cases, the decisions handed down due to IJ's efforts can impact millions, and even millions more when IJ wins at the Supreme Court.
Their clients are average Americans, especially those who simply do not have the means to take on large business or governmental interests. From regulations that prevent ordinary people from starting a business, to abusive fines and fees levied by state or local government, to law enforcement turning civil forfeiture into a revenue generator for a police department or city, most people struggle to fight back. IJ turns the balance of power around, backing victims with solid legal support.
I wouldn't call the money I give to IJ a "donation", but an investment in our future and a better America. They may, in fact, be one of the very best non-profits in this country.
