Review for Sandy Hook Promise Foundation, Newtown, CT, USA
As a new volunteer I’ve been asked to write a review of Sandy Hook Promise. After the shooting in Sandy Hook I posted on social media as much as possible hoping others would join in for a change. After a few weeks my posts were ignored so I went to a local awareness rally where people opposed to common-sense gun control showed up with rifles and holstered side-arms to intimidate our group. It worked. I was afraid to attend other rallies. After the shooting in Uvalde, Texas something in me broke. I can no longer be reasonable about the proliferation of guns in our country under the cover of second amendment rights. My anger, tears, thoughts and prayers have done nothing over the past ten years and so I reached out to SHP for volunteer opportunities because they know, first hand, the nightmare of losing a child to gun violence. Their mission is to End School Shootings And Create A Culture Change That Prevents Violence. Their simple intellectual statement, made without malice, attracted me because I want to be of service, if possible, to help shift the current political climate concerning common-sense gun control to a human rights issue in favor of the children of our country.
I went to my grandson’s eighth grade graduation yesterday. It was held in a grove of trees on a beautiful sunny day. I was gloriously happy, enjoying him and the other children as I watched them accept their diplomas. Mid-ceremony my stomach clenched when I realized we were sitting on an open campus.
