Review for Heroic Hearts Project Inc, New Smyrna Beach, NY, USA
I had my first psychedelic experience while still in the military. At the time, I had no idea what psychedelics were, and my purpose for taking them was to satisfy my curiosity about the experience. I had read articles and anecdotal accounts of how psilocybin and LSD could improve focus, mood, and creativity beforehand and wanted to see if I could exploit these drugs for their purported benefit. I had no understanding of what I was doing and had no respect for the medicine beforehand- in short, I abused them. It wasn't until after years of grappling with my experience and interpreting what I saw that I started to understand its healing potential. I wanted to share this experience with others who I knew could benefit from them, whether it be my friends dealing with clinical depression or the soldiers I had deployed with living with mental trauma and affecting their everyday lives. Still, I was aware of the stigma surrounding many psychedelics and reservations about their use. Had it not been for my personal venture, I would still feel the same-hesitant and skeptical. Heroic Hearts is an organization I wish I had found sooner. The group does far more than send veterans to retreat centers; they offer themselves as a tribe, a safe and familiar environment for veterans conducive to their healing. Their goal to reduce, if not totally eradicate, the stigma around hallucinogens is backed by their involvement in multiple studies and research reporting objective results outlining the benefits of psychedelic use. Had I known then what I learned by following the organization, I would have saved myself years of confusion in understanding my personal experience with psychoactive substances. I have high hopes, however, that through more exposure to the group, more veterans will have access to a safe environment designed to help them heal, and fewer people will be left to try and navigate their experiences alone.
I recommend this group to every veteran I know!
