Review for Women's Intercultural Center Inc, Anthony, NM, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I had the pleasure of visiting WInC through the SCSJ program offered by my university. I just graduated and this is by far one of the biggest experiences that stuck with me throughout my education.

Coming down to WInC to learn about immigration and the Anthony community impacted my life in a way I would have never expected. There's so much I could talk about with everything I experienced during my week there, but the biggest impact the program had on me was meeting all of the incredible women that inspired me and they shined a beacon on the type of woman I hope to become as I progress through my life story.

Mary Carter, the Executive Director of WInC, you taught me to be proud of who I am and stand my ground for the issues I believed in and how to fight for them. To use my words wisely and also be there to help others whenever I could. You amazed me with your stories but also your devotion to helping others, I just can't imagine my life not meeting you because it was an essential part of my journey.

Judge Garza, is one of the shining examples of an incredibly strong and caring Federal Judge. My time at the Federal Courthouse and the opportunity to meet with you and learn about the process of the courts helped me better understand the court system. So much went on without me truly understanding the process, but seeing you in that position and not only the work you do but also knowing how hard you work in your position to be compassionate and also uphold the law was incredible. You are incredible and I'm happy to see you able to balance caring for migrants while also being fair in following the judicial process. Most of all for taking the time to talk with our group. It was so amazing just to see a strong woman figure that sits on the bench.

Amanda Skinner, NM Asst. Federal Public Defender, another strong role model that I loved meeting so much. Being able to sit down with you not only to hear about your work as a Federal Public Defender but also to be open with our group about what we could do to help change the system. Hearing your stories but also seeing such a strong knowledgeable defender of the people gave me so much hope for our legal system. I know you and your entire team truly work their hardest to protect an individual's rights.

Jess Spohn, Clinical Director at the Dona Ana County Triage Center, RI International. The work you do when it comes to mental health and leading the way to treat it in your community was incredible, but also seeing the importance of being yourself and creating a workspace that is accepting of everyone regardless of gender and sexual orientation. You don't see as many role models such as yourself, so being able to sit at the table next to you and hear from you inspired me and motivated me to create places that respect your choice and make you feel comfortable for being who you are.

Marisol Diaz, Save the Children Action Network, you have been through so much, yet you don't let it hold you back or define you. You are your own woman and not only do you fight for what you believe in, but you also fight the perceptions people choose to have on one another based on race or gender. I can picture you proving people wrong every day and it was incredible to hear about your journey and everything you do now.

This was truly the greatest part of the experience is being able to witness and speak with all of the incredible women. Most times you're used to seeing males at the table, but here in this community, we got to meet with so many strong women, in strong positions, fighting for what they believed in without fear of being judged, without fear of being put down, they all stand strong.

I truly have to thank Saif who coordinated everything my group experienced for the week. Not only is he a strong ally to women but probably one of the best guys I know now. From making sure we were comfortable, making sure all of our questions were answered, making sure we had a great time, and taking us to see the sights, it wouldn't have been the experience it was without you. You are incredibly smart and the program you designed is "true perfection" (stealing that from you). But it truly is perfection, I learned so much, met people that changed my life, and the entire experience was so much fun it almost didn't feel like a standard trip. It was a unique experience and one I tell everyone they need to try especially if they want to learn more about immigration. You weren't biased, you didn't force an opinion on us, frankly, you were hard to read and that's because you wanted us to decide for ourselves how to look and feel about immigration and life at the border. You dropped everything on us and I found that amazing because I didn't feel influenced at all to feel like I should be on this side or that side.

The connections you have with every individual we met were the best part. Each and every person you introduced us to, seemed like they were family to you. From the way you spoke about them to your interactions with each of them was beautiful. You made me want to treat everyone like that, everyone in your life is special, and I just loved seeing that. I don't if you have known them for years, but that's exactly what it felt like. You allowed me the opportunity to see so many strong women at the table it gave me so much hope for future groups that will get to meet these empowering women of greatness.

Thank you, WInC.
