Review for A Shelter for Cancer Families (ASCF), Houston, TX, USA
How do you thank angels? When I began my journey one of my earliest concerns was how my family was going to afford all of the expenses associated with treatment. I was the only one working full time in a house of six including my two octogenarian in-laws that lived with us. My father told me not to worry about it, to have faith and to focus on getting better.
I soon learned that my insurance had additional benefits for transplant patients and I was then able to get many of my expenses covered as I traveled to and from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Fast forward a year later and just when I thought I was about to have my transplant UVA said that I was not healthy enough for the procedure. I was shocked at first but then honestly depressed. Then we found MD Anderson and it gave me hope again.
My first trip to Houston for evaluation cost me over $2000 and I was only here for six days. None of this was covered by my insurance as my case was, and still is, with UVA. Once again I started to worry about how we could afford treatment. We researched housing using resources provided by MD Anderson. We applied to ASCF for what we thought would be a short four day stay for some follow up appointments and you had availability!
We were excited and grateful. We arrived and the place was absolutely perfect. It's a short drive to the hospital and stores are in walking distance just as described.
I had my first appointment and my transplant doctor said that I still wasn't ready for the procedure but that was expected. What wasn't expected was when my blood work came back that my numbers would be elevated and that my doctor wanted to admit me into the hospital. My four day stay was going to turn into a 10 day admittance followed by another 3-4 weeks of recovery. My wife was upset and worried and promptly made arrangements to come down.
This is truly where I saw how angels of ACSF earn their wings. First we asked if I could stay three extra days because I was being admitted the next week and you found availability. Next I was told that my wife could stay in the apartment while she was here and I was in the hospital. Then my angels found space for me when I was to be discharged but there would be about a 9 day gap between when I would leave the hospital and when I could come back here. Finally we received another email saying that you had availabilty from the time I would be discharged to the time I was going home.
As I am writing this I still find it hard to express my full appreciation and gratitude for all you have done for me and my family. Thank you, thank you, thank you. If there is anything I can ever do to return even the slightest of blessings that you have given me please don't hesitate to ask.
With All Sincerity,
The Younger Family
