Review for A Shelter for Cancer Families (ASCF), Houston, TX, USA
It is difficult to put into words how amazing A Shelter for Cancer Family is. It has been our home away from home while my husband underwent a clinical trial for stage 4 synovial sarcoma. When we found out we would have to relocate to Houston from Tampa, Fl for at least a few months, we felt overwhelmed with the idea of finding somewhere to stay, especially because I was 7 months pregnant and knew that we would most likely be delivering the baby in Texas, away from all of our family and friends. When we were introduced to ASCF, we had no idea that it would become so much more than just a place to stay. Missy, Shellyn, Madelon, and everyone else at ASCF welcomed us with open arms and supported us through every step of our journey. From hosted dinners, to surprise holiday deliveries and celebrations, their genuine care was so evident. They even took time out of their busy lives to throw me a baby shower. As I reflect on our time spent at ASCF, I can’t help but remember how many times I was asked “how can we support you”, which means more than they will probably ever know. We did end up having our baby during our time at ASCF, and it was so nice to have a safe, clean place to bring him, while so far away from our home in Florida.
It is apparent how much pride they have in their campus. The apartments are clean, comfortable, and fully stocked with comfortable sheets, towels, kitchenware, and many other amenities. Our one bedroom had a comfortable king bed, a pull out sofa and large TV in the living room, and even had a washer and dryer! Parking is easy and safe (which can be hard to find in Houston!) The location/proximity to MD Anderson was so convenient and the neighborhood is amazing and safe to go on walks. None of these amenities were expected, but it just shows how they pay attention to every detail and how important it was for the residents to be comfortable.
We are forever grateful for everything ASCF has provided us. Thank you Missy, Shellyn, Madelon, and everyone else at ASCF (including all the volunteers) for running such an amazing organization!
