Review for Wings For LIFE International, Albuquerque, NM, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I had to complete public service hours and called various non-profit organizations to offer my time, but none were as responsive and welcoming as Wings for LIFE International. Ann Edenfeld, the executive director, immediately answered the phone and asked me to come in to the office and get started right away.

When I arrived to the office, I felt a sense of belonging and safety that I did not feel any where in public for a long time. The Wings for LIFE staff and volunteers were extremely friendly and I could feel their good energy radiate on me. Eventually after coming more regularly, I felt very close to everyone and now I consider Wings for LIFE one of my local “safe zones”.

The work done in this organization is one of the most beautiful and sincere I have ever seen. Not only is incarceration an every day growing issue around the world, but it’s also one that affects a person’s entire lifetime, their families’, and society as a whole. Wings for LIFE steps in to close gaps in this matter by directly helping those currently incarcerated, returning citizens, and any of their family members by connecting them to programs, resources, education, and employment in order to ameliorate their situation and quality of life.

With so many individuals caught in this system, and so many of their families suffering, there is a lot to do and thus volunteering is always appreciated. There are many tasks options ranging from basic office work, cleaning, computer work, presentations, videos, to arts & crafts projects. So that made volunteering feel very natural and all the excitement made time fly.

I’m extremely thankful of the time I have spent at Wings for Life International. They have been established for over 20 years, so it’s very certain to say that they are ahead of their time. Volunteering here has been an eye-opening experience, and hopefully one day thanks to organizations like Wings, our society can end the stigma associated with incarceration and we can start to focus on building families stronger, together — instead of profiting from a system that wants so desperately to tear them apart.

Respectfully, Jose Chavira
