Review for New York City Gay And Lesbian Anti-Violence Project Inc, New York, NY, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I have had the privilege to work with NYC AVP professionally, and I have also referred friends of mine to them for services. I simply cannot say enough good things about this agency. They are true leaders and pioneers in the field of working with queer survivors of violence. I have worked with almost most of thier staff over 5 years, and every single one of them has been highly talented, professional and dedicated. And they also have a knack for collaborating with other agencies and communities for everyones benefit without stepping on toes. In addition to meeting the needs of NYC clients, they also facilitate at least 2 other networks of other service providers. Other similar agencies often bully thier way into other communities and take over, and/or impose themselves on them. NYC AVP is acutely aware of the needs of other communites: technical assistance and support, but not imposition. Again, I cannot say enough good things about this agency. I would hate to take them away from thier mission, but I wish they could teach other agencies how to do what they do!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

my state of NY. Due to NYC AVP's leadership, they were able to secure the first ever funding stream for LGBTQ specific, domestic violence services.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

try to find some way to give the staff a raise and/or some additional benefit or perk.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

what I have learned from thier leadership and professionalism.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

professional, dedicated, knowledgable and passionate.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

hire a few more advocates to handle the hotline calls, and then use staff to do more outreach and education to: ALL the different communities in NY, and perhaps provide at least one LGBTQ specific shelter space.

Ways to make it better...

I had more of thier staff to spread around.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

funding, funding, funding. And then the support of thier legislators.

One thing I'd also say is that...

I hope NYC AVP is able to maintain thier level of services in these challenging times.

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

2009
