I heard about The Awakenings Project right after I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder when I was in school for art in Bloomington, IL.
I heard there was an artists' shared studio space for people with mental illness in Glen Ellyn, IL near where I lived. I was dealing with a lot at the time and did not become involved with Awakenings until years later. Immediately I felt a sense of community and compassion between the members. No one judged, they just appreciated and encouraged one another. Many years later I am happy to say we still have community, compassion, appreciation for one another, and continued encouragement and support. The Awakenings Project takes mental illness and demonstrates the artistic beauty, vulnerability, and strength that come from within those living with it. I am very thankful to be part of such a treasured organization.
