ABC is an outstanding not-for-profit. Its programs to assist landowners in Latin America to manage farms so as to protect birds that breed in North America on their wintering grounds are well known in conservation circles. ABC also has innovative programs to urge homeowners to keep domestic cats indoors (that otherwise kill millions of wild birds every year) and to urge the use of window glass that is visible to migrating birds, who otherwise die in the millions from building strikes.

I've been a member and supporter of ABC going back to the time of its founding by George Fenwick more than 25 years ago. George's vision had ABC concentrate on helping bird species that were most at risk for population declines, especially by conserving and/or purchasing land in Central and South America, where many birds that breed in North America spend the northern hemisphere winter. That continues to be ABC's main thrust. It also has special programs aiming at house cat owners, urging them to keep their pets indoors and explaining how outdoor cats kill literally millions of songbirds every year.
ABC is not the largest conservation organization in the USA, but it is arguably the outstanding example of how to concentrate effort and use donated funds effectively.
