Review for Youth Mentoring Connection, Los Angeles, CA, USA
YMC may not be the biggest charity, but it is one that puts its heart into every step taken to help youth. I have been a mentor for over a decade with them, and a board member for three, and never have I seen a harder working, bigger-hearted group of people. The kids they serve are not numbers or even just names--they are souls to be nurtured and seen and helped to come through the difficult times into a new sense of self, confidence and esteem. My mentee, Daisy, has gone from a painfully shy, awkward, quiet, scared teenager to a confident leader who sees the future as a positive opportunity instead of something to be dreaded. Ask her about YMC and she will say this group changed her life in ways that cannot be described.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
the community of South Central LA. It is a safer place because of YMC, which has stopped nascent gangs and kept youth who would otherwise have no where else to turn to see that they had opportunity and a chance at a different, more positive path. The kids know Juliana and Tony and the rest of the group-- they know they can trust them, and in trusting them, perhaps they learn to trust themselves.
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
fund them. Because so much effort goes into simply staying open in these difficult economic times, YMC cannot reach the number of kids who desperately need their help.
