Review for Kauai Humane Society, Lihue, HI, USA
We have been traveling to Kauai regularly for over a decade.
Locally, we support our regional rescue organizations via donations as well as adopting dogs - we currently have 3 living with us now.
After we started visiting Kauai on a regular basis, we learned about the Humane Society initially through social media. In particular, we learned about their Field Trip program which allows for folks to take a dog out for the day to get exposure to the adoption program as well as to provide them a day out. We've done this many times. The program really helps; this year (Sept 2021) we took a little guy out for the day, my wife posted pictures and a story about him to instagram and FB and he was adopted a few days later after the KHS shared her story!
KHS has a very important role to play on the island as they are the only shelter providing services for strays, relinquished animals, and free spay/neutering. They also assist with spay and neutering of "community cats" to keep the feral population under control.
You'd think that their services would not be so needed on such a small island with a small population, but that is not the case.
So far in 2021, according to their website (as of Oct) they have:
Transferred 435 animals to mainland rescue partners
Adopted out 920 pets
Returned 311 pets back to their homes
I cannot stress this enough - all the people that work at KHS are wonderful, caring individuals that work so hard for animal welfare. Kudos to their whole team.
