Review for High Fives Nonprofit Foundation, Truckee, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

For years I have watched and admired this organization. I would read or hear stories of High-Fives athletes that would lift me up, motivate, and inspire me. Now, 18 yrs after a dirt bike accident that forced me to adapt my whole life, High-fives was here to help me when I needed them most, as they welcomed me into their community of incredible athletes.
As most adaptive athletes will agree, the accident that caused us to have to adapt is only the beginning of our challenge. Particularly, in the SCI community, many of my peers agree that we would rather live without the ability to walk, than with the residual effects that our injuries have had. People always ask “what happened to you?” And always before answering I think, ‘what hasn’t happened to me!?’ People often see only one of our challenges, but almost all of us continue fighting a lot of other challenges that no one sees. When High-fives sees something in us as athletes it means so much more than getting financial support to afford adaptive equipment we might not otherwise afford on our own, but we become part of an amazing community that holds each other accountable to our goals and pushes each other constantly to be the best version of ourselves despite any of the residual challenges any of us face.
In addition to helping me get back on my own mountain bike, and back on the trails doing the activity I love most with people I love most, High-fives has made me part of something so much bigger than my own passion and I am so excited to journey forward with them, and spread their stoke to everyone.
