Review for Girl Scouts Hornets Nest Council, Charlotte, NC, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I have had such a wonderful experience volunteering for Girl Scouts Hornet's Nest Council! I went in last August, and was immediately and cheerfully greeted and given the information and instruction I needed to start a Girl Scout troop. I was really impressed with the organization - everything I needed for "behind the scenes" was in a notebook already, and the staff was very knowledgable on what it contained - all my questions were answered. They have an amazing support structure, both through staff, who have been completely dedicated to making my troop work and getting back to me quickly any time I need to contact them, and through the organization of volunteers. New leaders are immediately introduced to countless experienced volunteers who have activity ideas and advice on how to work with girls that may need a little extra attention and managing troop accounts. The council offers totes of supplies for specific activities or badges, "pods" to go camping in behind the council, and classes to teach first aid/cpr, firebuilding, and more. Everything you need for a successful troop is here. I knew I was going to enjoy working with the girls and this council - I was a Girl Scout through this council when I was a kid - but I never saw the "working" side of things. I'm sure it's come a long way from 15-20 years ago, but it's just as enjoyable the second time around because of the great support from the council!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I was a Girl Scout through Hornet's Nest Council when I was a kid, and now I'm a leader! As a girl, I made friends I never would have met without scouting, and learned things I wouldn't have been exposed to otherwise. Some ideas that I was taught as a kid at home and at school became more tangible and had a better chance to develop - like leadership and responsibility. As a leader, I get to be a part of the same thing for my little Brownies!

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Nothing! Well, I'm sure there's something somewhere, but there's not anything bad about the organization constantly nagging at my mind, so it can't be anything too bad - nothing I can think of.

Role:  Volunteer & I'm a Girl Scout leader through this council.
