This sanctuary is so special—everything is done with the welfare of the animals as top priority. The big cats are never touched by humans unless it is for a veterinary exam, and they are not included in public tours unless it has been determined the animal is social and enjoys the (distant) company of humans. The cats get enrichment to keep them mentally and physical stimulated, and are never caged—they live in large enclosures with natural landscaping. The sanctuary engages the public with school tours, educational programs, and much more. Truly unique!

My dear friend Jill brought the sanctuary to my notice about 15 years ago. She worked at the sanctuary and I visited her several times in Hohenwald. Even though we could not interact directly with the elephants (and rightly so) I began to share her interest in these beautiful creatures and what they had endured at the hands of their captors. Jill died unexpectedly a few years ago, so I make a donation to the sanctuary in her memory on her birthday.
