The inspiration behind me becoming an ECF board member traces back to a family festival event that the foundation put on years ago. My wife had worked for the foundation as a caseworker, so I joined her for the event and befriended this high school aged boy in a wheelchair who through a basketball injury discovered he had bone cancer. I was struck by the mature way he handled his reality. We became fast friends, sharing the bond of loving sports. This connection, along with his sad, eventual passing are the reasons that I dedicate my time to ECF. This foundation acknowledges that it’s not just the child, but the entire household that is affected by pediatric cancer. From the financial support to the mental health benefits to various programs (pre-pandemic, we even held a silent disco party), ECF is able to provide meaningful assistance to families who struggle with pediatric cancer.
