Sometimes a pure "hand out" is needed...but sometimes what's most needed is a "hand UP". That's how I see the work of Birch Community Services. This amazing nonprofit works with 'working poor families' to not only keep them from falling off the ledge but most importantly, to teach them to build a solid financial future. By delivering a carefully balanced program of support and education, Birch repeatedly gets their participants on their feet and positioned for future success. I love that the financial literacy training is required and that the program not only focuses on the income vs. expense equation but also what factors may be in play that are keeping participants from living within their means and setting aside for the future.

My only wish is that we could duplicate this program over and over to reach even more deserving, hard working families.
