Review for Women's eNews, New York, NY, USA
Born in South Africa, I have, since 1966, when I arrived in the US, been actively engaged in seeking to change the ways U.S. foreign and economic policies impact, often causing great harm, on African struggles for freedom and democracy. I was for many years Executive Director of the American Committee on Africa (ACOA), one of the key solidarity organizations relating to Africa. I am now continuing my interest from a "retirement" that still leaves me deeply engaged in key issues, and I value the keen eye with which Women's eNews watches African developments. I have maintained many contacts and information sources on the continent, but one of the continuing "lacks" is a sustained focus on the critical arena of what is happening to women in Africa. Any photo of "Africa's Leaders"
immediately highlights the problem..... woman hold up half the sky, but they are almost totally absent from leadership roles at all "publically" recognized levels, although they play a critical role at the base, community levels of their societies.
ENews provides important ongoing attention and stories about what is happening to women in Africa, with a range of reports, from vignettes on the activiities of individuals, groups or alliances, to analysis of repressive legislation, policy developments etc.
I use their material for background constantly -
