I've volunteered in Chicago and New York for almost 20 years. Serving as a Big Apple Greeter has been my most rewarding volunteer experience. I've self-assigned a specialty, Harlem; I've read about the neighborhood's history, I've explored it on my own; and I've talked with residents.

Visitors are immensely appreciative of my taking them to parts of Harlem they never would have known to explore -- Striver's Row is a special example.

The organization is smart and efficient. It screens volunteers. It supports our efforts. And it helps me feel I'm making a real contribution to my city.
