My Nonprofit Reviews

Review for Little Brothers-Friends Of The Elderly, Hancock, MI, USA
As popular a nonprofit as Little Brothers is, initially in the Keweenaw and now expanded to Marquette and Ontonagon Counties, I'm a little surprised not to find reviews here. Hundreds of people volunteer to help each year with in-person holiday meals or home deliveries for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter; transportation to medical appointments; regular individual visits to elderly without family in the area; heating wood deliveries; and a variety of other programs. Sometimes entire families volunteer for single events or establish an ongoing relationship with a particular senior friend. Members of fraternities and other organizations at Michigan Tech also help out. Maybe people don't rely on reviews here because LBFE is so well known and respected! My understanding is that this LBFE affiliate is the first one to serve a largely rural area, one which has a high number of elderly residents living alone or without nearby neighbors. It's a great service to our region for which I will continue to volunteer and donate until such time as I need their help myself.
Review for Union of Concerned Scientists, Inc., Cambridge, MA, USA
UCS has been one of the top national nonprofit resources for science-based research, reporting, and evidence-based decision making on environmental issues for decades, particularly focused on sound science and climate change. To maintain independence, they do not accept corporate or government grants. Supporters can opt for a minimal number of mailings each year, mostly consisting of their quarterly Catalyst newsletter/magazine. They have also been better than many nonprofits in not bombarding email inboxes with unsolicited messages and solicitations.
