I am a veteran who struggles with depression and suicidal thoughts. When my wife found We Are The 22 I became aware that I wasn't alone, that there are many veterans who like me were turning to substance abuse and self medication. I had suffered in silence for years, so I decided to reach out to Mikel Brooks. When we spoke we exchanged stories & found similarities. Over the years I'd learned that by helping others I was in turn helping myself emotionally so I was excited to serve alongside the members of We Are The 22 when the opportunity arose. I attended the Applied Suicide Intervention Training & Wat22 inhouse training and became an active responder. I've since been on several Suicide Interventions & each time it has helped me stay proactive in my community & benefitted me mentally & emotionally. We were able to get the veterans much needed help within the VA, connected to resources in the community & find reasons to live. I'm happy to be a part of a "boots on the ground" organization that directly impacts & serves veterans in there time of need, in whatever ways possible, but mainly to prevent loss of life.
