I grew up knowing about Helping Up Mission (HUM) down in Baltimore and their work of providing hope and transformation to individuals struggling with poverty, homelessness, and addiction in the city. It was not until I had applied to be an intern in the Marketing Department and step foot on campus that I realized how much more of an impact this place has than what I envisioned as a homeless shelter. Helping Up Mission offers intense physical, mental, and spiritual help to those who need it the most. I was absolutely blown away when I took a tour of HUM and heard more about the daily routine and systems set in place. HUM meets men and women’s physical needs by providing beds, showers, meals, clothes, toiletries, and services (free of charge) like laundry, a gym, rec room, and a barber shop all on their campus. HUM has multiple relationships with healthcare providers as they walk men and women through therapy, counseling, and meeting the physical need of obtaining health insurance and medications. In addition, what I admire the most about HUM is the spiritual program that points men and women to freedom in Christ. The spiritual recovery program is not only making a physical change, but a heart change. There is a vigorous amount of resources HUM has made available to those struggling and they are truly making a difference in the city.
