I still remember the conversation I had with my mom where “skin cancer” and “my dad” were in the same sentence. I felt like I had been pushed out of a plane with no parachute. Confused, frightened, and riddled with anxiety. I couldn’t fathom my dad not being there to tell me how proud of me he was for graduating, to calm my nerves as he walked me down the aisle, or to wrap me around in his arms whenever he wanted and told me, “I love you baby girl.” Treatment was the next step. Watching it grow, disfigure my father, and completely shatter his self-esteem was heartbreaking. How do you convince someone that they are still beautiful in every way when they do not feel it themselves? My dad was foolish not to schedule a yearly visit with a dermatologist, conduct self-examinations, and be proactive in sun safety. Eventually, he recovered and everyday since his diagnosis, I advocate and share my dad’s story. If one person can be motivated to get treatment early to follow through with their appointment, then my effort and time would be absolutely worth it. Underestimating the dangers of sun damage is irresponsible. Skin cancer is not just a mole that could lead to a scar. It can be the beginning of something far more dangerous.
