Review for Mural Music & Arts Project, East Palo Alto, CA, USA
I have been witnessing the work that MMAP has been doing in East Palo Alto for a couple of years now, and they are truly one of the most consistent, creative and committed community arts youth organizations. As a professor at Stanford and Director of the Institute for Diversity in the Arts, I am interested in the ways that community organizations interact with youth through the arts in order to inspire them to do great things - I have seen few models better than MMAP. Their work is outstanding and not only inspires many youth, but also inspires me to keep doing the work that I am doing.
I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
numerous ways. I've watched the youth grow, learn, create, and display their art work and performances. I've been to community nights where they demonstrate their learning and spread what they've learned to other youth and adults in the community. I have been empowered by this, as have countless others.
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
expand it because their work is so important. They are already expanding in other cities, but I see MMAP as a national model for youth arts work in the community.
