Rikki's Refuge Animal Sanctuary, under the Life Unlimited of Virginia umbrella, is an all-life, no-kill sanctuary currently home to nearly 1,300 animals of 22 species. For many, this is the last hope to live out their lives with love, food, shelter, medical care, friends and pass away quietly with those friends in attendance when the time comes. The incredibly dedicated staff and volunteers work hard to make Rikki's a safe and welcoming haven, both for the animals and the people who care for them. Drive through the gates, along the rainbow fence (a symbol of hope and love) and visit with the horses, sheep, cows, ducks, goats, pigs....All of them are well-cared for and well-fed! We exist on private donations and a lot of volunteer labor. Thank you, all, because we couldn't have done this over 20 years without you!

The nearly 1,300 animals who currently call Rikki's Refuge home, as well as the thousands of others who have been fortunate enough to have lived out their lives in this caring and loving sanctuary have found their pot of gold at the end of the rainbow fence. Rikki's embraces the unwanted, the abandoned, the differently-abled, the socially challenged, the chronically ill and loves them all. Not one creature at the Refuge is considered less because of a missing paw, an eye, blindness, deafness or any of the many conditions that would have had their lives cut short elsewhere. Rikki's teaches compassion and understanding to children through the visits with the animals. It teaches the value and worth of every living being, regardless of how they look or what their problems are. Volunteer and it teaches teamwork and the pride and satisfaction of a job well-done, a job that helps someone else and the gratification of that is its own reward. I've volunteered here since 2012 and it's been a remarkable experience!

Rikki's Refuge is home to the elderly, the unwanted, the abandoned, the abused, the chronically ill; all those beings that no one else will take in. The work that is done there everyday by a small, dedicated staff is remarkable. Miracles happen at Rikki's every day. Animals that no one thought had a chance of a happy life recover at Rikki's with lots of love, lots of caring, vet care, a warm place to sleep and, of course, food! I've volunteered at Rikki's for almost three years and my heart is still touched by the caring, compassionate, hard-working staff every time I'm there.
