Review for Labrador Rescuers, San Diego, CA, USA
We have looked for a special dog for over 3 years that would be the perfect companion and support dog for our teenage daughter. We have been unsuccessful finding a therapy or support dog that would help with non epileptic seizures and uncontrollable tic movements with our daughter. Over the past few years, prayers were answered in many ways. Our daughter has grown out of the seizures and her tic movements. The need for the perfect companion dog was there and we simply prayed that the right dog would come along. The right dog was found!!!
A relative referred us to a dog she saw on the Labrescuers.org website in San Diego. The dog she was referring us to was fortunately already placed in a forever home. Looking at the available dogs on the website, we found our sweet Mylee.
(Her name was spelled Mili, but pronounced My-Lee, so when adopted we changed the spelling but kept the name.)
Mylee is a amputee. When she is in public, she gets lots of attention, which draws the attention to the dog and not onto our daughter.
Mylee had been surrendered at just 5 months old. She was born with a bad left front leg that was deformed and double jointed. Lab Rescuers learned about her, and picked her up at the vet that she was surrendered at. Lab Rescuers worked with a vet, and had the lengthy leg surgery done to correct the leg. Unfortunately, the leg healed however was still painful. At 8 months old, the Lab Rescuers made the difficult decision to remove the leg. Once the Amputation was completed, we understand that Mylee was no longer in pain, was now playing, and was able to really bond with her foster family.
We did the simple online application for adoption, and we began the process for a dog. We expressed interest in Mylee. We have had a three legged cat before, and we knew some of the limitations for a animal missing a front leg.
Despite the Covid 19 Pandemic, Lab Rescuers arranged a home inspection with Facetime. We showed the volunteer the safe one story home and yard that we could provide. A Facetime call was arranged with the foster family. In the facetime call, we were able to see Mylee and ask lots of questions. The foster family then brought Mylee over for a home visit. Once lifted out of her SUV, Mylee went directly to our daughter and bonded with her. A nice visit with the foster family and Mylee found that we were a pretty awesome match. The foster family took Mylee back home and we were told that we will be notified of the decision. We received a phone call shortly after and the foster family agreed that Mylee didn't just bond with our daughter, but the rest of the family as well.
Mylee has now been at her forever home for three months. she is now 14 months old.
Mylee is the perfect example that a dog does not need four legs. At the dog park, people have to take a double take to realize that Mylee only has three legs.
In closing, there are many lab rescues out there to choose from and work with. We recommend Labrescuers. Understand that these are all volunteers that are putting their heart and soul into these dogs. Our foster family has become good friends with our family and Mylee will always be one of their special ones to visit. They know the dogs, and they know a good match when they see it. There are many awesome dogs out there looking for furever homes. Our family recommends Labrescuers.org
